I have practised Encaustic Art since 1997 and love the vibrancy of the colours and wonderful three dimensional textures that can be achieved with this medium. Each painting is totally unique and can never be repeated, although similar effects can sometimes be produced.

Encaustic literally means "to burn in" and this form of art is thought to be at least 2500 years old. The Ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians used charcoal to heat the wax for their paintings. These days electric tools such as an iron, stylus, hotplate and hot air gun are used to melt coloured beeswax to obtain many different effects. Each painting is highly textured and has a glossy finish.

I enjoy the surprise element involved, as you can never be quite sure what will happen when melting the wax. Encaustic Art can be used for traditional paintings, and lends itself well to Fantasy and Abstract Art.

The intricate patterns that can be obtained using Encaustic Art give a remarkable 3D effect which is not always possible to portray with scanned images. Rubber stamps, photos and computer images can also be used to enhance the Encaustic Wax paintings.
